Exploratory writing
For creative thinking, divergent thinking, lateral thinking, or kicking ideas around
Rough draft talk:
Rules:
- Accept all suggestions (no criticism or bad ideas when exporing).
- Encourage creativity. The wilder the idea the better.
- Build on ideas. Encourage combinations, improvements, free wheeling, and hitch-hiking.
- Generate a large number of ideas.
- Everyone says their idea out loud and each writes their own ideas.
- Use visuals: diagrams, sketches, webs, maps, & doodles.
- Stay focused.
The 5-10 minute period, of rough draft talk is the most productive.
Set up suggestions:
- Allow flexible seating.
- Have individual notebooks for all to record their ideas.
- Have writing utensils: pens, pencils, markers, and crayons.
- Organize notebooks so ideas can be easily foound later.
- Have a word wall or other area with fitting vocabulary for the topic.
- Have supplies like highlighters, clipboards, sticky notes accessible to all.
