Rudy counting tiles and then counting beans
Supporting Notes on development of number sense, place value, unitizing and more ...
- Whole number sense
- Place value ... notice unitizing
- Measurement as a process that starts with the identification of something to measure - a property of an object or event, then a selection of a measuring system and appropriate unit (standard or non standard), and finally a process to iterate the unit across the unknown object or event to be measured.
- Measurement estimation
- All measurement is inaccurate and therefore an estimation.
- People choose how to estimate by the accuracy required.
- Estimation is an approximate selection of a unit of measurement and the number value used for the actual measurement (... .001, .01, .1, 0, 1, 10, 100, 1ooo, ...).
Focus questions:
- Notice how confident Rudy is in his thinking.
- Notice how he was able to visualize the volume of beans and use it as a unit of volume measurement.
- Was he doing so concretly or abstractly or both?
- What is it that you would be confident that Rudy understands and doesn't?
