In The Golden Compass, Pullman begins his story in Oxford England at a time when England was supreme, starting the industrial revolution, politically powerful government, church, and educational center of the world. Within this setting Lyra is coming of age; expanding her explorations into the organizations that vie to rule the world - government and religion. How people can be good and evil, how they conduct themselves, make choices and what should be her role in her life and death.

Plot

• Lyra Belacqua (Silvertongue) and her daemon Pantalaimon, hide in wardrobe listen... Discover - alethiometer and an attempt on Lord Asriel (snow leopard) Uncle, to poison him.
• Roger and Billy Costa are taken by the Gobblers.
• At dinner Lyra meets Mrs. Marisa Coulter (golden monkey) and is amazed by her. So when she is asked to go with her north and that she will take over her education, she wants to go. Her fear she won t be allowed is unfounded as she discovers Mrs. Coulter has some kind of influence on the Master so he agrees. Lyra is elated.
• Before leaving the Master gives Lyra an alethiometer (Golden Compass) and tells her it can tell her the truth, but not how it works. Above all else don t let Mrs. Coulter know you have it.
• Lyra goes shopping and generally likes the new arrangements until one day she is ordered to get rid of the bag she carries (has alethiometer in it) She refuses and Mrs. Coulter s monkey attacks Pan and she tells Lyra she will obey...
• Lyra now hates Mrs. Coulter and searches her study and finds evidence she is involved with the Gobblers (General Oblation Board) the papers also list Roger and Billy among the taken. Then she catches the monkey trying to steal the alethiometer.
• Pan gets it back and they escape out an upstairs window.
  No sooner than Lyra runs away that she is caught in a Gobbler's throwing net,
  However, she is saved by the Gyptians.
• Lyra travels with the Gyptians and meets - Tony Costa, deadmen's daemons faded, John Faa, ropings, Farder Coram/seer, Learn - mom dad still alive and dad killed Edward Coulter...
• They are forming a party to rescue the children. Lord Asriel 135 helped Gyptians... How to use the alethiometer, create party...
• Farder Coram wants to find Serafina Pekkala, a witch. Who tells Lyra she is part of a prophecy involving the fate of the world, and where the children are being held, and she should employ the armored bear Iorek Byrnison Svalbard bear King. • Balloon to Svalbard. attacked by cliff-ghasts, Lyra captured by bears and taken to Iofur Raknison. Dungeon, spins tale to tell Iofur to get him to challenge Iorek to fight for kingdom. Iorek becomes king, release all prisoners...
• Iorek Byrnison - takes Lyra to where father is held prisoner. Meet...
  Father leaves with supplies and Roger heading for bridge.
  What he needed was a child and she had brought him Roger.
• No wonder when he first saw her he was so bewildered.
• Iorek and his bears take Lyra.
• Zepplin and troops follow, battle, flame thrower sets Zepplin ablaze...
• Sees her parents talk, mother refuses to go and she is in tears,
• Father leaves to destroy dust or stop it affecting people, if they think dust is bad, it must be good... We believed them that it was bad, but what if it's-
  We got it wrong with Roger we won't get it wrong again.

Plot summary

• Will takes mom to Mrs. Cooper (piano teacher).
  Men come to get green leather writing case. Crash into one falls downstairs and thinks he killed him.
• His father (John Parry) vanished long ago (adventurer explorer).
• Looking for some place to hide, sees cat vanish, discovers window.
• Meets Lyra Sivertongue, who asks where his daemon is. Since can t see decides his must be inside him or he wouldn t be human.
• The alethiometer tells her he is a murderer and she felt safe with him.
• Serafina Pekkala, witch, Kaisa snow goose daemon.
• Mrs. Coulter asked Fra Pavel who had another alethiometer what would happen... She tortured a witch to find what was predicted for Lyra, Serafina killed her to stop her suffering and left to find Lord Asriel to find what was happening. Talks to his servant, Thorold, who thinks he is going to kill the Authority of the church. Meets Mr. Scoresby, Texan/ Hester hare daemon, and asks him to join witches council as they decide what to do. Queen of Latvian witches Ruta Skadi. At council they say Lyra is the chosen one. She chose the right cloud-pinne spray at Dr. Lanselius.
• Fly north and to another world to find Lyra.
• Lyra dreams about Stanislaus Grumman, that he wasn't dead and it wasn't his head her father showed.
• Discovers there are at least three worlds as City in is Cittagazze and full of Specters. Also gang (Angelica, Paolo, Tullio...)
• Go to Will's world where she pretends to be his sister, Lizzie Random
• Finds Dr. Malone who is working on dark matter - Dust finds that it is around some old skulls in museum and man sees she has the alethiometer...
• Read Will's father's letters and see that he found a window in the Arctic.
• Lee Scoresby and witches travel till see Specters attack... Find what they are and find that Lord Asriel is building a fortress at the top of the world connected to others.
• Lyra discovers Sir Charles stole her alethiometer and wants the knife to get it back.
• Go find the old bearer of the knife... Fight with Tullio ... cut two fingers off, kill him. Now Will is the knife bearer Giacomo Paradisi tells knife will cut anything, and teaches how to open windows and close them to other worlds before dieing. Knife made by the Guild of the Torre delgi Angeli and the Specters are their fault.
• Use knife to steal alethiometer from Sir Charles.
• Lee Scorsby looks for Grumman and finds Parry is him and that Parry summoned him with a ring of silver and turquoise of Navajo design. Parry wants Lee to get Lyra under the power of the knife. Go to get balloon and have to use the church ring from the dead Skraeling to get from
• Lyra and Will were being attacked by the gang... Serafina s Kaisa and other witches saved the day... Try spell to heal Will s bleeding fingers.
• Sir Charles Latrom finds Dr. Malone. Her partner, Oliver, wants to join Sir... who will continue funding if they get the alitheometer.. Dr. Malone no way. Goes to computer fixes, talks to dark matter and finds...249... She is to play serpent and tells to go to guarded window.... The specters will not harm you.
• Go to Lord Asriel... witches unite... Lee, Grumman, witches, were found because of ring and attacked...
  Lena Feldt watches as Mrs. Coulter puts poison into Carlo, Sir Charles drink... Then Mrs. C has specters capture Lena s daemon and they torture it to get it to tell that Lyra, Will, knife, and 20 witches are up the hill... Lyra is to be Eve the mother -she will disobey- she will... Mrs. C says I will have to destroy her, and later says this time she will not fail, I ll see to that. As Lena dies she realizes that living was hateful, and death was no better, and from end to end of the universe this was the first and last and only truth.
• Stanislaus Grumman, Jopari, John Parry finds Will puts bloodmoss on fingers and tells of great war and that this time the right side must win.
• You must go to Lord Asriel. Witch Juta Kamainen killed because she loved him and he scorned her. He was my father and neither knew until the second that you killed him. She kills herself.
• Lyra was gone...

 

Plot notes

• Mrs. Coulter watching over Lyra tells Ama, who brings food, that she is under a spell, but is really drugged. Dreams of Roger.
• Will with Balthamos and Baruch, angels... See dead man, witch eaten by a specter and a blue lake. Baruch sees Lyra sleeping in a cave.
• Metatron finds Will and he and angels escape to another world. Tells of the Authority, dust seeks dust and Metatron being in charge.
• Baruch leaves to tell Lord Asriel and Balthamos stays with Will.
• Serafina Pekkala meets King Iorek and tells what Lyra has been doing and he leaves to help her and she leaves to find the Gyptians.
• Ama hides and sees Lyra struggle with her mom and discovers she is being drugged.
• Lord Roke is a Gallivespians spy captain for Lord Ariel.
• Baruch arrives Metatron wants to destroy the republic, knife is in hands of Will, and he is friends with daughter Lyra and will not come here till he finds her. Sends for his alethiometrist,Teukros Basilides to find the cave.

• Fra Pavel at the Inquirer of the Consistorial Court of Discipline is asked ... Answers the knife can kill anyone. and if the child is tempted, she is likely to give in to temptation as Eve did, and fail. If she does give in and fail, then sin will destroy Dust and all who oppose us - sin will triumph. Then tells the child is in Himalayas ... talks about the importance of killing Lyra.
• Assassin - Father Gomez has been doing preemptive penance for pre absolation. don't look for girl, look for tempter Louise. Leaves to assassinate her.

• Mary Malone task is to find boy and girl and play the serpent... Finds wheel seed riders (Mulefa) ... Lyra pods - trunk beings carry off.

c - 8

• Will settles disagreement between bears and village people by asking Iorek to fight and bear says not fair, then give piece of armor, gives helmet, cuts into pieces, says not fair you win. Helps villagers rebuild, they give fuel. Yurick Bearestein takes Will up river to rescue and protect Lyra. All converging on Lyra.

c - 10

• Mary Mulavah sees pod trees, oil, geology to provide roads pods need constant vibrations to crack. Trunk needs others to tie knots, need partner. Bird raid food, Alapy destroy all village. Mulafa trees ding.

c - 11

• Truth told wring intent ... all lies you can invent. The Chevalier Tialys and Lady Salmakia hid in Zeppelin going to Lyra. Dragon flies hatched and they were to protect Lyra.
• Will finds way to cave meets with Mrs. C and she tells she is tired of lying and that she is protecting Lyra from the church that wants her dead.

c - 12

• All come together, Will uses knife to try to get Lyra, Ana with powder, Iorek ready to hold off army from Zeppelins with Lee. When he gets in he sees Mrs. C who reminds him of his mother and as he cuts his way out he breaks the knife.
• Will has gun from Mrs. C. stalemate,

c - 13

• Tialys sticks her with spur and paralyzes her. The Gallivespians... we will help because that is the task we have been given, but what?
  Iorek find to fix knife, and go to land of the dead to see Roger, tell him sorry, and Will s father... Loadstone resonator to communicate with Lord Asriel.
• Iorek says can and will fix the knife, but warns them that they may know what they do with the knife, but they don t know what it does on its own. Your intentions are good. The knife has intentions too.
• Can you see the sharpest edge? Then how do you know what it does? Warns Will not to think of his mother when he uses it.
  Marissa, Mrs. C meets with Asriel. He is amazed that she has been touched by Lyra...
• Lord Asriel, King Ogunwe, Lord Roke, Xaphania (an angel), We intend to be free citizens of the Republic of Heaven. Intention craft... Mrs. C escapes or Lord A lets her and sends Lord Roke with his blue hawk.
• She will go spy for us and as soon as she knows where Lyra is, she will go to her and we will follow.
• Mary Malone made amber mirror with help of Atal and later fashioned it into an Amber Spyglass to see the dust...
• Lyra asks how get rid of spies, told don t, your life depends on them. Asks how to get to land of dead, follow the knife, and is this the tight thing to do, yes. Her death leads her and she and Will must leave their daemons at the river s edge. Mrs. Malone wants to see sraf, tree tops, tree house. Father Gomez looses track.
• The Harpies meet No-name. Will help if tell story. LIAR...
• Travel among dead looking... decide to let them out, find Roger, he tells her it wasn t her fault he got dead... Couldn t get out with knife everywhere underground. Harpies come and are mad she is going to let all out. The Authority gave them the job of tormenting the dead by feeding off their bad thoughts... Will asks why they kept quiet and still when Lyra spoke, the answered that it nurtured us because we had no idea of anything, but wickedness. Your job then can change to escorting the dead out and let them tell true stories.
• Mrs. C arrives at the presidents tells all? When she is asleep sneak in steal her locket and lock of Lyra s hair. Use with bomb to destroy Lyra. Can t get all hair back, must find the bomb, but she is taken to the cellar and put into chains. She was going to be used to cut link from her to her monkey and the energy would be used to set off the bomb. Lord Roke was limited in the poison left in his spur... but died using the last on a witch. Lord Asriel to the rescue.
• Lyra found Mr. Scoresby. Warns of bomb. Take knife, find where Lyra s hair was cut and cut another lock, open another world and put it there. Now and close it again. Bomb goes off, ghost will wait and attack with Asriel. Slide starts Lyra falls, saved by No-Name harpy. Get out Will cuts hole wide enough for 7-8 walk abreast and Roger was the first to leave.
• Dr. Malone in tree house looks to dust stream goes into trance and was being swept away with the stream. She struggled to get back and the dust sensed it and carried her back. Father Gomez stepped out of the mist... Mrs. Coulter wakes and asks Lord Asriel if the bomb got Lyra.
  And the cloud mountain or chariot?
• Lord Asriel, King Ogunwe, Xaphania, Madame Oxentiel, and Teukros Basilides. Are told the his daughter and this boy lost their daemons and Metatron intent on capturing them. Must find and return them to them our future depends on it. Else Metatron will control them.
  Asriel talks to Mrs. Coulter who asks him if he meant it when he said we will destroy dust forever. News comes of finding the daemons ....
• Lyra gives name Gracious Wings to harpy no-name. Specters attack Ariel s men and ghost go to their aid. Mrs. Coulter takes Intention craft and flies toward clouded mountain meets Metatron who asks for her daughter. Tells her she is not in her power or she would have brought her. She says she isn t but her daemon is. How can that be? He calls her a cesspit of moral filth. Yes I can betray him easily. I can lead you to my daughter s daemon and you can destroy Asriel and control her too.
• You have not had a wife for thousands of years, I could be your consort.
• Will and Lyra stumble into cliff-ghasts and a large cage of crystal with?
• Mrs. C leads .. I could strike him now Metatron says, not yet says C I want to see his face to know I betrayed him.
• Goes To A and whispers if Lyra safe. We won t live will we? I wanted him to find no good in me, and he didn t. There is none, but I love Lyra. I felt that I needed to commit great crimes so he wouldn t see the love in my heart. I was so afraid he would see... Asriel leapt at him at once. the Mrs. C. and both their daemons. Fight angel wings flying away Marisa!! She leapt with all her hear, to the angel, and her daemon and her dying lover, and seized the beating wings and bear them all down together into the abyss.
  Lyra and will cliff ghasts Tialys saves by putting spur deep in cliff-ghast's neck.
• Hear man in crystal litter moaning and suffering use knife to cut open shrink with fear and in the breeze he dissolved with his eyes blinking in wonder and a sigh of relief.
• Lady on an indigo hawk arrives and tells them she will take them to their daemons. Use knife see daemons, each grab the others and feel shock of excitement. Lee Scorsby tells them and bears to leave and floats into air...
• Buried Chevalier Tialys and Lady Salmakia.. meet Mary Malone... Atal...
• Mary is called to chasm and sees the ghosts joyously leaving the land of the dead. One ghost beckons to her and tell... tell them stories they want true stories... and all will be well.
  Mary looks through the amber spyglass and sees the river of shadow particles stronger than ever. What can I do... Tell them stories. Goes back and tell Lyra and Will true stories of her life, Nun, leaves, research scientist, falling in love, taste of marzipan, and at conference tasted again and all came back... church, miss god? yes but missed the sense of being connected to the creation.
• Dust leaking out wounds of subtle knife. Stream something new. Dust came into being when humans became conscious of themselves, but it needed a feedback system to reinforce it and make it safe. She saw sun, moon, clouds, wind, grass, trees, all trying to keep the flow of dust in the universe. Matter loved dust. It didn t want to see it go. Father lands...
• Will and Lyra go to look for daemons. Find, but are hiding, talk about future... marriage,,, not from my world... keep knife... they are following... Father Gomez is watching... picks up rifle and feels something has his daemon. Balthomos... Lyra give Will red fruit... exclaim love for each other... Gomez chases Balthomos who doesn t have the strength to kill him and asks what he wants. But you are an angel? What does that matter? Then Balthomos steps in water and leaves foot print so F G can see where he is... When Balthomos let go of beetle daemon F G threw himself and Balthomos and was expecting something that wasn t there, reached for help but Balthomos kicked at his hand, and he fell down toward the stream landing face first in the water. Balthomos used all the weight he had to keep his face underwater until his daemon disappeared... then Balthomos was gone... Mary looked through spyglass and saw that the terrible flood stopped flowing and looked as if it were falling as snow.
  She looked at Will and Lyra coming and saw what humans could be their true inheritance. These children, no longer children, saturated with love were the cause of it all.
• Daemons come, Serafina Pekkala takes Daemons and talks to them. Tells shapes will settle... Tells that because of what they did they are like witches able to separate from their daemons. Names Wills daemon Kirjava. They need you for what they have to do next. You have to tell them what you know.
• Mary shows Serafina dust with spyglass... explains that until yesterday Will and Lyra didn t see each other in a way until the did then and that was like a pebble thrown into the stream at a critical point to change it so that the dust was attracted to them and it stopped flowing in the other way. And now it's safe or will be when the angels fill the great chasm in the underworld.
• But the forces of the kingdom will elect a new leader and come back...
  Daemons come back, tell... dust must not all leak away or all good will fade and die... No one knew because the edge was so too fine to see, but big enough for dust to leak out... ***????**** Thousands they never closed... dust leaking out... We must close every single one said Pantalaimon... And Kirjave says we must choose one world to live in... Lyra cries out... The daemons don't know why, they didn't know what ...
• Will and Lyra knew ...
• Will's father said you can spend a little time in another world ... but not long.
• Kirjava says an angel told them that all the windows must be closed...
  What if make hole only the two of us use and short time... No each time it makes a specter...
  One of us will have to come to the other's world ... I Will ... No your mother. .. I will... I couldn't stand to see you .... as I grew stronger ... DO you remember my father saying we have to build the republic of heaven where we are ... I thought he meant Lord Asriel, but he meant us, we have to live in our own worlds...
  Lyra is going to ask the alethiometer .... I can't make it work... it's left me...
  Xaphania comes and asks for help to teach her how to close the windows.
  Yes but you must help us... there is no way to help... there are fates that even the most powerful have to submit to. There is nothing I can do to help you change the way that things are.
  You read it by grace and you can learn in a lifetime.
  Must show others how to make dust by being kind, patient, cheerful, and keep minds open and free and curious... Then renew enough to replace what is lost through one window... Yes.. No. must leave one for them... the dead...
  Tell people the harpies want to hear the true stories... They must tell them alone...
• All right I will show you how to close a window. But what about another Specter? Xeno... we will take care of those... and will close abyss made by bomb and great opening made by Asriel and all others but the one from the world of the dead. Will that confine you to one world? NO; we have other ways to travel... Lyra asks if they can learn... Yes you can as Will's father did. It uses the faculty of imagination. Not making things up. It is a form of seeing. Not like pretend. It takes long practice... What is worth having is worth working for. You have a friend that has already taken the first steps.\
• Should I break the knife... Yes
• Surely one window ... We will close them all, because if you thought there was one you spend a lifetime looking for it and that would be a waste of time. You have more important work to do in your world.
• There will be no travel outside it anymore.
• Lyra and Will touched each others daemons and felt a pleasure so like joy when she put the fruit to his lips ... and she knew that neither daemon would change now, having felt a lover's hands on them.
• The gyptians arrived the next day.
• Lyra goes with will to the Botanic Gardens ... find bench ... sit there once a year ... On midsummer Day at midday as long as I live ......
• Tries to break knife as before thinking of mother, can't think of Lyra touch tear on cheek, break ...
• Lyra back at Jordan college, with Master and Dame Hannah Relf... Ask if they promise to believe her, money parents, Master not to worry endowment..., alethiometer study... future... never did only present,
• What and where ... not a bear or witch or gyptian... study alethiometer... school... wait till ready. Goes to Botanic Garden sat on bench, reflect on building ... We would have gone and they would have gone with us... but we have to be cheerful, kind, curious, patient study think work hard in our different worlds to build the Republic of Heaven.,..
• *** ?? Existence for these things? Without LOVE?

 

I thought it was the end of the story when I first read these three books. After reading the second trilogy, I think there are some inconsistencies. How did more windows get opened? What happened with the specters? And did the last three books provide enough support to conclude the windows should be left open?

Lyra and her demon, Pantalaimon adventure north after the events of The Amber Spyglass.

Lyra and Pan, forever changed, after their seperation on the shores of the world of the dead. With this journey Lyra hopes to gain counsel, from the Consul of Witches, on how to get Pan to talk about this time when they were seperated and how to cope with the changes.

She meets Dr. Lanselius, witch consul, who suggest she ask the witch consul what Serafina Pekkala did in such a case. She finds Serafina wnated to ask her daemon,the same question but never did. Also finds Dr. Lanselius and Pekkala are married. On the way back Lyra and Pan talk about how being able to distance from each other can support hate. They appear to resolve to retreat from discontent for each other.

After she and Pan do talk, she doesn't find out what he did, but they sorta resolve to try

Fantay England 10 years before Golden Compass

Chapter summary

• Malcolm at home at the Trout until Lord Thomas Nugent previous lord chancellor of England and two other men arrive inquiring about a baby at the Priori.
• Malcolm takes his canoe, La Belle Sauvage, out and notices a man drop something, acorn. The man is accosted by men at a bridge.
• Malcolm, back at the Inn, opens the acorn and finds a note. Asking someone to use the alethiometer to inquiry about Rusakov field and Dust.
• Later the men at the bridge CCD (Consistorial Court of Discipline) arrive at the Trout and inquire about others at the Inn before (Lord Nugent …) who they are looking for, post a wanted picture, George Boatwright tears it down, they threaten his daemon, he leaves, disappears.
• Malcolm goes back to try to find more about the man with the acorn. Mrs. Carpenter tells him, he drowned, is a historian, Robert Luckhurst, Magdalen College.
• Back to Trout,learns he missed Lord Asriel, who brought Lyra to the Priori. Goes and sees her.
• Coram van Texel meets with Sweden Gunnar Hallgrimsson & Axel Lofgren. Coram (Sophonax, Sophie) wants to know how the Egyptian people should or shouldn't deal with external threats. Talk about Mrs. Coulter and why she visited. Study Rusakov field and consciousness being a property of matter and wanted to consult the alethiometer about where her child is, because she discovered she is the subject of a prophecy by the witches. He leaves, is followed by man with Hyena, fight, escape and he codes a message to Lord Nugent about what he found.
• Dr. Hannah Relf (Jesper) use the Boolean alethiometer to find where the acorn is. The reader learns she is a member of Oakley Street recruited by George Papadimitriou. Goes to the Trout and asks Malcolm if he knows anything about an acorn? Leaves book with address, he returns it, they discuss Luckhurst drowning, his relationship to Oakley Street. Hannah lends Malcolm books and he will share information he gets from the Trout and the Priori.
• Malcolm tells parents about Hannah, but not spy stuff, town talks about rain, river, flood control, dredge, or more reservoirs. Eric tells Malcolm and his friends that his dad said Luckhurst was strangled. Malcolm visits priori and Mr. Taphouse is making thick oak shutters. Goes visit Dr. Relf, she is replacing broken door pane, Malcolm helps, share information exchange books. Hannah goes to visit George Papadimitriou and shares what she knows about… Talk about how to meet in the future and agree recruiting Malcolm was good.
• Hannah gets note to meet with Harry Dibdin, she tells him her insulator has been murdered… Asks if Lord Nugent is an Oakley man? Child of Mrs. Coulter and Lord Asriel.

  George Papadimitriou in Pilgrims' Tower, Lord Nugent, waiting for Hannah and Bud Schlesinger who went north to find out about what witches are saying about Lyra. Share what they know, Malcolm, Alice, Lyra probably in canoe, Bonneville probably after them.Lyra must fulfill the prophecy without her knowing it. Queen Tilda Vasara heard prophecy about Malcolm who is to carry a treasure to safety.

Bonnevile is catching up to them, outrun, beach on shore at big house, hide boat, seek help, man says he will, takes shotgun, Bonnevile kills him, they hide in cellar, Bonnevile talks to Malcolm through locked door, Malcolm asks about Rusakov field and dust, they make a run to the canoe, push dingy into current, Malcolm stabs Bonnevile, Alice shoots the shotgun, his daemon foreleg smashed unable to get up, all three escape in the canoe
• Nineteen
  Moving downstream worry about Bonneville, alive or dead? Then motor boat with searchlight approaches, goes ashore so they don't see them when the catch up. Mr. Boatwright is there, takes them to a cave with others escaping the CCD. Andrew, member The League of St. Alexander, sneaks away and brings men in the Security of the Holy Spirit. Fight, Malcolm and Mr. Boatwright hit unconscious, take Lyra.
• Twenty
  Malcolm interrogates Andrew, finds they will take Lyra to the Wallingford priory. Malcolm, rests, Alice finds Mrs. SImkin, and when he wakes up they question her and find out children are mistreated and the floor plans of the place. Take canoe to rescue. Find iron grate above water that leads to scullery, uses to get in. Find Lyra, hear father and sister talk, know she is daughter of …, grab her and get her back to the canoe.

  Malcolm tells Alice … Heads downstream. Land on an enchanted island, Diania, a fairy befriends them, Malcolm opens rucksack, finds folders of papers, alethiometer, enchants them, nurses Lyra, feeds them eggs, Malcolm uses Rumpelstiltskin riddle to fool her, give her box with rock, and they escape.
• Twenty-two
  CCD and Oakley tree out looking for them. Egyptians call the flood part of the secret commonwealth. Alice tell Mal how Bonneville kissed her … and his daemon was hurting Ben and she couldn't stand it. Current gets strong, carries them along, can't get out, go down water fall and into great garden with ghost like people. Canoe has hole, fix with canvas and resin. Bonnevile is there, chases, leave down dream to gate. Giant guards.

  Malcolm asks to open so they cantata Princess Lyra to King Albion, strong enough to open them, need orders, uses sheet from Bonneville, hold her? Yes, kiss finger, open. Go further see Tilda Vasara, Queen the witches of Onega region, sleep night, hide from CCD, pick up pine branch and gone.
• Twenty-four
  Malcolm paddles all day and feels someone is near. See search light, need to stop, not here says Alice, Mausoleum, rain, in canoe, Bonneville, slices through tarp, gets Ben, Alice, Astra care for Lyra, Malcom separate and goes to help Alice. He is possessed by wild dogs, attacks, oar, hits both man and daemon dogs howl, without dogs he would stop, but couldn't until Bonneville was still and hyena vanished. Dump body in water, drift off.\
• Twenty-five
  Downstream to capital city. Lyra fever, mend oar with wire, goto pharmacy get some supplies, man is trying to keep them while wife goes to get CCD, figure it out and rush to leave. Bud Schlesinger in boat. Lord Nugent meets Lord Asriel and they take boat to go … CCD and Asriel converge on canoe, Asriel helps them into his boat, gun shots, Asriel gets upset says they are playing. Alice tells him off by sticking up for Malcolm and telling what all he did. P 444!
  Oxford, Scholastic sanctuary, Malcolm slips Aleithiometer into blankets with Lyra. After school master asks what to do about Malcolm and Alice, Asriel replies- Treasure them!

 

 

Book notes

• Lyra Belacqua now Silverstongue and Pantalaimon have changed since their separation, something came between them, and Pan explores without her.

• Pan out exploring and sees a man, coming from the RR station, attacked by two men, before he dies he stabs one attacker so bad the other attacker needs to help him flee and seek medical help. As he is dying his daemon goes to Pan and begs him to take his wallet. He does and carries it back to Lyra.
• Lyra and Pan go to the breakfast hall and meet Miriam Jacobs who received a letter that says her father's factory, that buys roses from Attar to make their products declared bankruptcy after a market collapse. 
• When they get back to their room. Pan tells her he saw someone being murdered.
• Later they go through the wallet, Anthony John Roderick Hassell. And before he died he said don't let them get it. It's all up to you and your... They search more and find an appointment for next year at Cafe Antalya Suleiman Square and a key to a luggage locker. They go to police, when the get there Pan recognizes a policeman as the killer, they leave, go to the locker and find a rucksack, then they go to Dr. Polstead, historian.
• Marcel Delamare gets report from thieves who didn't get what he wants. 
• Lyra goes to town, talks to Dick Orchard and finds that a man Benny Morris, from the mail depot has an injured leg.

C 6 - Mrs Alice Lonsdale 

• She was a housekeepper and appointed Lyra's benefactor at the college to look after Lyra, She goes to see Malcolm Polstead (who can separate from his daemon cat) Pan says it saw him coming back with the wallet. Lyra argues with Pan and who accuses her of not being able to think clearly, caught up in fog of magic and afraid of something because you can't understand it.
• Lyra asks about rosewater. She tells him to talk to Dr. Polstead, says they don't get along because shewas a bad student when he tried to tutor her. 
• Dr. Polstead arrives and Lyra notices they seem to have a casual relationsip, Alice, Mal, can see you later ... Lyra questions ... Alice gets upset and tells her if it weren't for him she woldn't be here. Lyra wants to know the story, but Alice won't tell till gets Mal's okay.
• Pan tells Lyra that Malcolm's daemon is the one who saw him, they can separate?
• Newe master of Jordan, Dr. Werner Hammond. Talks to Lyra about her place at the college, father left her there, Money from Dr. Carnes, father vanished when she was 12, and Carnes kept paying, but now no money left. I have toleave? you can stay till graduate at St. Sophia's, move to a smaller room, live as a servant, and eat with the servants.

C 7 - Hannah Relf

• Lyra gets a letter from Hannah, come see me this afternoon.
• She does ... 
• Hannah Relf (Jesper), Dr. Polstead, Mrs. Lonsdale, and Malcolm review Lyra's history. Father Ariel and mother Mrs. Coulter. Ariel brought her to the college and declared scholastic sanctuary to protect her. Dr. Carne paid for her keep. Lyra's Alethiometer came from ... Bonneville (who stole it from a monastery in Bohemia) who was chasing her. Alethiometer helped her find her way into and out of the world of the dead, helped Will, restore the bear kin's armor. Alice says Malcolmsaved her from the flood. Diania suckled her with fairy milk, Malcolm fooled her and got us away. And Malcolm saved Alice from Bonneville who raped her, by separating from Astra who stayed with you while he killed Bonneville.
• Why didn't you tell me before. Dr. Carne told us not to. WHy now? things are changing ... 
• Parliament is passing a law to get rid of a lot of old statutes, among them is the scholastic sanctuary which protects Lyra. Why would the Magisterium want to hurt Lyra? Don't know, but an MP who was fighting against the bill's passage was killed suspiciously. Dr. Carne was coerced to make a bad investment so her money is gone.

C 8 - Little Clarendon Street

• Lyra & Malcom talk, about separation, 
• The two thieves ransack Lyra's room, find her hiding place, but Lyra moved Hassell's stuff.
• They survey the contents of Dr. Hassall's rucksack and find a bottle of rose oil, rose seeds, and Dr. Strauss's diary. Decide not safe there so will take folder and books to Hannah's to put into her safe and specimens to botanical garden. And Lyra was told she should leave so Malcom takes her to his parents Mr. & Mrs. Polstead (Trout Inn where Lyra was years ago). They are ecstatic to have her. 
• Lyra has a dream of her and Will and their deamons ... mulefa ... feels the intense love and knows she has to go to the red building.
• Macolm goes to Hannah,review and copy papers in rucksack, talk about all they know, figure out other side has figured out a faster way to read their aleitheometer. 

C 9 - The Alcemist

• Malcolm takes fim to get developed.
• Malcom goes to Botanical garden and they confirm Dr. Hassall was at research station at Lop Nor and interested in rose ... tell him nothing more. 
• Lyra melancholy, tries to figure out new method to read the Al. Pan argues with her. Need more imagination.
• Lyra still trying to figure out Pan and his complaint about no imagination and confusion with books. And why do they hate each other?
• Later, she uses the alethrometer to find out more, she sees a boy, Oliver Bonneville, Delamare's Aletheometer reader looking for and at her. SHe writes notes ... goes to sleep.
• Pan takes a notebook page and leaves. Takes it to Sebastian Makepeace and asks him about names on a list, of which Makepeace's is included. He says it is a clavicula adimenti and tells him to show it to Lyra, and he will tell him more if he comes back with her. Pan tells about their not getting along ... imagination v. reality. 

C 10 - The Linnaeus Room

• Malcolm gets note from Lucy Arnold to come to the Garden for a meeting ... Goes to tell Hannah, who heard about found body ... Need to tell Glenys Godwin current director of O.S. Nugent died earlier. 
• Lyre talks to Pauline finds she loves Malcolm, Lyre confused about that, begins to see him differently.
• Malcolm arrives and meets with Lucy, Charles Capes, Abbabel Milner, Timur Ghazarian, Brewster Napier, Lars, Johnson. Police think a meaningless crime, but ... Napier tells of how rose oil helped his lab see effects of the Rusakov field. And then his lab was broken into and a collegue is missing.
• Knock on door. Porter tells men from CCD are here, sent them to aother room, Guide .. out. Lucy Charles, and Malcolm stay. CCD arrives Captain Hartland asks questions about Hassell, roses, why Malcolm didn't go to police ... Answer just thought he lost papers, didn't know murder, we are researchers ... CCD is told to leave.
• Lyra & Pan argue over difficult to talk to each other, and Pan wants to tell her about thenotebook with names he hid from her with Makepeace's name on it and that he went there and he told him to bring her back and he would tell them more, argue more about her leaving him when she went into the underworld, and not telling him. In the morning he is gone.

C 11 - The knot

C 19 - The Professor of Certainty

• Pan reachers Wittenberg, can't talk to others without Lyra, goes to blind school to get information on Gottfried Brande, ...

C 20 - The Furnace Man

• Paintings of everywhere, the Myriorama, tables and chairs, trading center. 
• Go through door and enter a different world. Trucks, earth moving equipment, removing roses, other life, dead daemon, all working paying no attention to anyting else. Destroying everything? Daemons are lethargic ... What are youi building? Communication hub. At the moments it's called the expressway.
• Meet Silvina, explains used to own the land, but merchants, development bught it with this new money, but didn't have a choice.
• Goto town for food. No money. Won't take gold coins. Malcolm trades stuff, but they don't want anyone to know they are trading. Go don't stay here. See TP signs. 
• See poice knocking on door, couple won't let them in. Lyra talks to Ethel Butler. Explain ... Used to trade, paid penny for toll on bridge. Now credits 100 tokens is one credit. No one knows where they came from. Companies, conglomerate, daemons started to get sick when all the change happened. People looked at them as a nuisance to be arouind ignored them. And quit helping neighbors, stopped obeying laws, environment, public lands. Decisions were to be made by company boards. Save money for town govenrment. 
• People come to evict them. Lyra argues, no good, no time, out, grab knitting bag. 
• Malcolm I know what the alkahest is.

C 34 - The Alkahest at Work

• Pan follows Olivier to red building. Pan talks to Bonneville. What do you want? To stop yu from killing Lyra. I am not. Belamare might and blow this up. I want my alethiometer, then I'll leave her alone and forget about her. What's in there? Door to another world. ?Think Im stupid? We have been through them. Do you remember Mrs Coulter. No. Listen. Engine, bomb.
• go in red building. Pansees otther door runs for it. OB looks around and follows. 
• Lyra and Malcolm. Butler tell them... I will everything. Stay by door to wait for Pan. 
• alkahest destroys bonds, people daemons ... Everything gives way to making money. Money swallow everything. 
• Tells Malcolm she put her ciclet in Mrs. Butler's knitting.
• Delamare enters, Pan and Bonneville freeze, run, hear dragging bomb in, Delemare chases them and his owl plucks Pan into the air.

C 35 - Dust and Roses

• Lyra and Malcolm reach door. It's locked. There is no keyhole. Try knocking and then the door exploded.
• Colonel Schriebere and 3 of his men killed, Olivier is stabbing Delamar with a clasp knife (AI), the owl daemon disappears, the opening obliterated.
• Outside Lyria and Malcolm were thrown back, door gone, use needle. Pan gets out.

C 36 - An Incident by the Lake at the moon Festival

• Pan and Lyra together ... kiss ...
• Abdel Ionides and Leila Pervani walk up the hill towards them. 
• Would it be possible and safe to go back?
• The town was preparing for a festival (full moon). 
• OB notices the work being done, but it had stopped. Asks what is being done, answer, shrug, doesn't concern us really. won't make a difference.
• Lyra, Malcolm, AI and LP decide not to go back yet. AI tells Malcom they were gong to stay and study, but all this construction? 
• Pan and Lyra reflect, decide Malcolm should marry Alice.
• Olivier sees Malcolm and Lyra. 
• Pan and Lyra continue to talk ... Dust is imagination, our response to the Rose Field. The Rose Field needs it too. Its really there around everything being conscious. Dust is what happens when our imagination touches the Rose Field. And the Rose Field encourages imagination.
• Lyra show Myriorama cards to Pan ... drops one ... Olivier picks it up ... 
• Sister ... brother ... join you ... go ahead. 
• They talk. shows him how the cards work. Olivier taks the clasp knife and throws it into the lake. That's over ... What are you going to do when you get back? someone will pay me to read the alethiometer. There is a lot to discover about the new method. And you. Go on telling stories, I expect said Lyra.

 

 

I think there are some inconsistencies between the first trilogy, Golden Compass, Subtle Knife, and Amber Spyglass.

Major ones are:

1. How did more windows get opened in the ten years between the two trilogies?
2. What happened with the specters?
3. Do the last three books provide enough support to conclude the windows should now be left open?

Difficulties I had with the Dust trilogy:

1. With so many characters it is hard to know sometimes who is speaking. Even with the main characters, their daemons, and all the hundreds of pages of dialog.
2. It was hard to know what the main theme is and keep what the different characters were included to add to one side or the other of each of the themes. Imagination, real, conscious, true, , The Secret Commonwealth, fairies, gryphons, angels, Dust represents, Ruskov. field represents, then at the end money, business, consumerism, trade,
3. The climax is hurried and final resolution uncertain.
4. The demise of the Delamare's army is noted in less than a sentence:
   Tilda Vasara watched the army enter the marshes, mires, and quicksands ... death gave everyone of them the same welcome and the witch saw it all with wonderment and pity.
5. What do Abdel Ionides and Leila Pervani really believe and is their involvement only centered around research for Dust... 
6. Would it be possible to go back?
7. Would their daemons be safe since Straus and Cariad weren't.
8. How did the townspeople who didn't care about anything suddenly care about the Moon festival?
9. Will Malcolm and Alice really marry?
10. What is Lyra's future.
11. Is this an adult trilogy? While it seems most of the times that Lyra's and Pans behavior was more appropriate as a teenager, except for the inclusion of sexual activity, which I thought might have been included because of the ten plus years between the Amber Spyglass and the The Secret Commonwealth.
12. What is the relationship between real and imagination, Dust, the Rusakov field, healthy daemons, commerce, money, trade, ...
13. Maybe another book .... ?
14. Lyra was part of a prophecy ... first to close the openings then to open them?
