Goals for EDU 216


The initial candidate will:
Goal 1 understand different roles of literature in language and literacy development.

Goal 2 understand that students need opportunities to read, write, listen, speak, view, and represent visually ideas they gain through transactions with literature to become literate.

Goal 3 understand a wide variety of experiences with a wide variety of literature are needed to develop and support literacy.

Goal 4 understand how contextual factors in the school and out of school influence student's use of literature and their development of literacy.

Goal 5 know past and present trends in children's literature

Goal 6 know classic and contemporary children’s and young adults’ literature, and what is appropriate for different students.

Goal 7 understand that goals, instruction and assessment should be planned and implemented in a cohesive manner.

Goal 8 understand, respect, and value different kinds of children's literature.

Goal 9 use literature to create a literate environment that fosters interest and growth in all aspects of literacy so learners desire to read widely and independently for information, pleasure, and personal growth.

Goal 10 make good instructional decisions that support the development of literacy.

Goal 11 recognize the importance to include parents and community members in literacy development of their children and other students and ways to achieve their involvement.

Goal 12 select and evaluate instructional materials for literacy, including those that are technology-based.

Goal 13 participate in professional development.

Goal 14 reflect on one’s practice to improve instruction and other services to students.
