Teacher role
Billy is a nine-year-old fourth-grade student from a middle-class family. He is adopted and the only child in the family. Billy’s parents will give him just about anything he wants and will do anything for him. Billy steals anything in sight. He takes pencils, books, and personal belongings of other children. Maria has just complained about missing her new case of markers. Wilt says "Is it the one that Billy is using?". Maria says, "Yes give it back." You step in.

Student role - Billy
You are a nine-year-old fourth-grade student from a middle-class family. You are adopted and the only child in the family. Your parents give you anything you need and will do anything for you. You have been accused of taking pencils, books, and personal belongings of other children. Right now Maria has said her markers are missing, Wilt says you have them, and the teacher is walking toward you.

Short term
- Speak with student to find what the student needs are and then try to meet them.
- Encourage the student when they work cooperatively with peers (reinforce incompatible behaviors).
- To punish the student for their behavior would not allow them the opportunity to accept their behavior or being taught an acceptable behavior.
Long term
- Suggest student and parent(s) visit a counselor or psychiatrist for family counseling.
- Praise and encourage the student when they work cooperatively with peers (reinforce incompatible behaviors).
- Tell the student that someone is stealing from students in the class and ask the student if they could watch the students desk to see who is stealing.
- Behavioral modification strategies with the student (Premeck principle, token economy, contract...)
